Arizona state Treasurer Dean Martin, a Republican candidate for governor, called on Tuesday for the creation of statewide tent cities to house the expected increase in the number of illegal immigrants expected to be arrested under the state’s controversial new immigration law.
Martin offered the proposal during a news conference, suggesting the camp-like setups would be similar to the existing tent city jails in Maricopa County that frequently hold DUI offenders and inmates moved out of crowded county jails.
His proposal is in response to growing concerns in Arizona that the cash-strapped state cannot afford to enforce the new immigration law that goes into effect next month.
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, one of the new law’s strongest defenders, has for years maintained tent city jails in Phoenix, which frequently receive favorable news coverage and have proven politically popular.
Martin is trailing Gov. Jan Brewer in the state’s Republican primary after her reelection prospects were boosted by signing the widely popular immigration bill.
Martin attacked Brewer during the news conference, contending that she’s not truly committed to securing the border. Martin said Brewer only began paying attention to the issue “when she started doing election-year polling.”

Read all 130 comments in our forumYou could only hold them for so long, and what do you do when you realize that Arizona State has no legal right to deport? Some of them are tax payers, so, not only will you lose their tax revenue, the state will now be required to feed them with tax payers' money. How do you spell concecration camp?
AZ seems to be on the cutting edge of controlling illegal immigration.
Ah, what a good idea! Internment camps. Let.'s name the first one Dachau. Has sort of nice ring. These AZ government folks are truly wackos.
Only your sick mind would come up with such descriptions.
That image will perfectly illustrate the law in a way that everybody can understand. A great image for Arizona.
The naive ignorance of open-border zealots is profound.
Illegals must be made to fear living in the US more than staying in their native country
No, everyone but an Arizona bigot can see the parallels between a tent city and a concentration camp. Arizona bigots will then call for the forced labor of the illegal immigrants. The bigots will then want less care and more work. The bigots will look away when prisoners die.
Bigots.
That didn't scare away your immigrant ancestors.
How many have died in Arpaio's tent jail through forced labor and less care? You are a racist.
La Raza is already screaming "racism!". Meanwhile, in Peru, you might notice that the Peruvian police had no trouble getting a confession from that monstrous little murdering animal, Van Der Sloot. Wanna guess why?
Because the police in Peru probably told him,"listen white boy. You better start talking or we're gonna kick your ass all the way to Machu Picchu and back.. And then we're gonna throw you in a tank with some of most ungodly gang-bangers and cannibals in Peru. If you're lucky, they will kill you quickly. Otherwise................................."
The moral of the story is, tough law enforcment works. Sissy liberal policies don't, period.
Wow, the flakes have really come out of the woodwork on this one. Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the only concentration camps in this country the work of a Democrat President.
And the UNITED STATES CONSTUTITION -- THE LAW OF THE LAND would be on their side. See below:
Amendment 13 - Slavery Abolished. Ratified 12/6/1865. History
1. Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
2. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
Please note the underlined part. Yup they "do those jobs american's won't do" Legally, we could make them do it for free.
Oh and since the 13th was passed AFTER the 8th -- slavery or involuntary servitude is NOT cruel and unusual punishment.

Another day, another tea party racist. Really? Tent Cities.. can we say discrimintory (segregation due to race (which is how it will be portrayed..) is illegal.
Not to mention.. that whole tent city thing can be easily percieved as something resembling concentration camps... (being Jewish.. it was very easily percieved.. )
Does he have an idea.. yes. But George Bush/Dick Cheney had ideas too.. look where THAT got us.
It aint the 1700's anymore
try to keep up

Fear, are you kidding. 1000's of AZ employers are clammering to higher them for cheap labor. You do know that's why illegals come, they know they will be hired by unscrupulous employers and their country has a very poor economy.
If you don't want illegals tell employers not to hire them, but do know without cheap illegal labor the cost of goods and services will increase when you have to pay a legal worker a wage. I'm more than willing to pay more for goods and services, but I guarantee the rightwingers who are the stalwart for this bill will complain if they do.
The GOP arew playing you people for fools. They rile up the wingnuts on immigration knowing full well they serve their true masters the business lobby who want cheap labor. You do know the kicked up a fuss over proposals last year for national id card and a national emloyment database. If implemented this make it easily veriable which hires are illegals. Howeve they like the rules now, where the emplyer has to knowingly and willingly hire an illegal. That's a huge loophole b/c if you don't ask for papers to verify before hiring you didn't know and if they give you fake papers or SS number you didn't willingly and knowigly hire them if you don't check or have a database to check. They don't want a database to check.
Maybe AZ looked at racist FDR's 1942 Japanese internment camps for the idea. Thought after reading Teasly's post.
And the funny thing is that the last time the U.S. set up concentration camps, the inmates were actually U.S. citizens. That's Democrats for you.
slavery or involuntary servitude is NOT cruel and unusual punishment.
If you can twist the Constitution to argue the morality of your otherwise immoral opinions, go for it.
